Intent
Our aim is to to engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As pupils progress through school, they should begin to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. They should also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation. We encourage our pupils to produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences and to become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques. Our pupils are taught to evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design and to know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.
Implementation
To ensure high standards of teaching and learning in art, craft and design, a progressive, skills based curriculum has been designed and implemented across school. The art, craft and design scheme of work at Brookhouse Primary School is based upon the 2019 Primary National Curriculum in England, which outlines the knowledge and skills required in each Key Stage. To inspire and engage pupils in their learning, each unit of work begins with researching and reading about a key artist, craftsman or architect. Using the artist’s work, pupils unpick the skills used and are given opportunities to practise them using the teacher modelling technique, which is evident in throughout the scheme of work. Pupils then apply the skills learnt to produce their own innovative art piece. All pupils record their learning in sketch books which stays with them throughout school. This enables pupils to refer back to previous learning. When relevant, educational visits, such as museums, and local walks are planned to give pupils first hand opportunities and experiences linked to the artist, designer or architect they are learning about.
Impact
Beginning each unit of work with researching an artist, craftsman or architect will develop pupils understanding of great artists and understanding of the historical and cultural development of their art form. The continuous use of sketch books encourages pupils to review and revisit their previous learning. We measure the impact of the Art, Craft and Design curriculum through the initial assessment of drawing techniques and end assessment of applying new techniques. As a result, children achieve the expectations for their year group and key stage in a range of art, craft and design skills. Children leave Brookhouse with knowledge of a range of artists, designers and architects, understanding and appreciating a wide range of art.
