Year 1

Year 1

Pupils begin in the Autumn term by developing their locational knowledge of the United Kingdom and how it is divided into four countries, using atlases and maps to help them. They will also learn that the world has five different oceans and seven continents, exploring basic weather patterns and the hottest and coldest parts of the world, further developing knowledge of physical geography

In Spring term they build upon their locational knowledge by further exploring places within the UK, particularly focused on Blackburn and the surrounding area. To develop their place knowledge, pupils will focus particularly on Blackpool, linking to learning regarding how large bodies of water are sometimes made up of different seas, focusing on the waters that surround the UK. These waters will then be studied regarding how these are useful to us in terms of transport and leisure, further developing their human geographical knowledge.

In Summer term pupils will revisit weather patterns, physical geography, comparing seasonal weather based upon photographic evidence collected in Autumn term with a field study of the local area conducted this term. During this field study they will use maps and aerial photography to conduct their fieldwork, whilst also using directional language to navigate. In the classroom they will investigate the use of symbols in maps and make one of their own to depict areas of local importance.
